To avoid fines when driving a rental car in Dubai and the UAE, it’s important to know and obey local traffic regulations. The most important and obvious advice is to be as disciplined as possible on Dubai’s roads. This will not only save you money on fines but also ensure your safety in the city’s heavy traffic.

Strictly Observe the Speed Limit

This is the most common reason for fines. Dubai’s speed enforcement system works flawlessly. Pay close attention to signs. Speed limits range from 40-60 km/h in the city to 100-120 km/h on major highways. Speed cameras are installed everywhere and are often unnoticeable. They record not only speeding but also other violations (such as not wearing a seat belt). Most major roads in Dubai have a 20 km/h (for example, on a road with a 100 km/h sign, the radar will only trigger after 120 km/h), but it’s best to always strictly adhere to the posted limit, as this rule doesn’t apply uniformly everywhere.

Be mindful of parking and the Salik system (toll roads)

Always pay for parking using parking meters, SMS, or special apps. Make sure the payment is valid for the entire parking period. Fines for unpaid parking come quickly.

The Salik automated toll system (electronic pass) operates on Dubai’s main highways. All rental cars are equipped with readers. Payment is automatically debited from the rental company’s account. At Fresh X Rent, Salik tolls are already included in the rental price.

Other important recommendations

  • Forget your phone while driving. Using a mobile phone (even in your hand) while driving is strictly prohibited. The fine for this violation is substantial. Instead, use the hands-free system or Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
  • Always wear seat belts (all passengers). The driver and all passengers, including those in the back, are required to wear seat belts.
  • Avoid aggressive driving. Reckless driving, sudden lane changes, failure to follow directions, and flashing headlights to yield lanes can result in serious fines.
  • Drinking and driving is punishable by imprisonment and deportation.

How do I pay fines when renting?

When you rent a car from Fresh X Rent, you sign a contract that authorizes us to automatically debit the fine (plus an administrative processing fee). The fine is registered in the traffic police system with the vehicle’s license plate number. We, in turn, identify the driver based on the rental dates and debit the card you provided at check-in, adding a small administrative fee (usually 50-100 dirhams).
